Understanding Nirayana Bhava Chalit Chart & Its Importance in Prediction Making

On observing this sky from the Earth, we see billions of stars. A group of stars when forms a recognizable pattern, we call it a constellation. There could be uncountable number of constellations in the skies depending upon from where we see it. We see them from the Earth and the astronomers have discovered 88 constellations till now.

In astrology, we only use 27 constellations and they form the entire zodiac belt. There are 12 zodiac sign in this zodiac belt and each zodiac sign has a width of 30 degrees. Each zodiac sign is owned by a certain planet and a planet can be present either in its own zodiac sign or in some other zodiac sign.

The zodiac sign which a planet occupies depends upon the point of reference, the Earth. Earth is moving around the Sun along with other planets, therefore, the speeds of movement of other planets appear to be changing all the time. This happens due to the relative motion of Earth and the other planet. If we change our point of reference from Earth to the Sun, then all the planets will appear to move with constant speeds.

Understanding the Houses

When you see your Main Birth Chart (Ascendant Chart) you find out which zodiac sign was there on the Eastern horizon when you was born. Let's say, you are born around the equator at the point indicated in the above diagram. This means when you were born, Sun was directly above your head. This means you were born around 12pm and you have Sun in the tenth house in the Ascendant Chart.

You have Sun at 90 degrees and it should be the starting of Cancer sign. Your ascendant should be at 180 degrees, Ascendant is the point where sky and earth meets, if you are at that point then you cannot see 180. Your ascendant is somewhere between 0 to 30 degrees of Virgo. This is how your exact location on Earth comes into play.

Let's assume it is somewhere around 15 degrees Virgo while your 10th house is at 90 degrees. This means that the actual angular width from the starting point of the 10th house to the 1st house is just 75 degrees while it appears to be 90 degrees in the Ascendant Chart.

Now, your 4th house is just below your feet, if the tenth house is at 90 degrees then the starting of the 4th house should be at 270 degrees. This means the angular width in this case is around 105 degrees.

This diagram will help you to easily understand the above situation. The outer circle is the actual zodiac sign while the lines indicate where the houses should fall. Also, you can see that the difference between other houses may increase or decrease but opposite houses always stay 180 degrees apart.

Due to our position on earth, the angular width of houses change and since the house decides good and bad results (not the zodiac sign) the result of a planet changes. This makes understanding the Nirayana Bhava Chalit Chart really important.

In simple words, zodiac sign divides the sky into 12 equal parts but houses divides the Earth into 12 unequal parts which is based upon our location on Earth. The results we experience depends upon which houses that different planets and zodiac signs occupy in our chart.

This is the correct method of calculation of houses. There are other system of houses apart from this one, although we never use it, I am writing it just for the knowledge point of view.

1. Whole Sign House Division - The houses and the zodiac sign are considered the same. This is what usually people follow. For an Aries ascendant person, the fifth zodiac sign would be Leo and according to this system, Leo represents the fifth house as well.
2. Equal House Division - All the houses are of 30 degree width and the starting degree of each house is same as the ascendant degree. Suppose, you have ascendant at 15 degree Aries then your fifth house will start from 15 degree Leo.
3. Placidus House Division - This is the system we just followed.

What is Nirayana Bhava Chalit Chart?

Nirayana Bhava Chalit Chart is also know as the Cuspal Chart or Chart of the Houses (Cusps). It shows exactly in which house (cusp) a planet and a zodiac sign is present. We use it to find out the houses a planet signifies depending upon where that planet is placed and where its zodiac sign(s) is present.

The word "Nirayana" means the sidereal method of calculating the placement of zodiac signs and constellations.

We usually call it Bhava Chalit Chart and there are two different ways of casting this chart. The first way, the degree of the Ascendant is taken as the starting point of the ascendant, and the second way, the degree of the Ascendant is taken as the center point of the Ascendant.

So, lets say you have your Ascendant at 15 degrees Aries. The width of first house is somewhere around 38 degrees. In first case, the ascendant will lie from 15 degree Aries to 23 degree Taurus while in the second case, 15 degree Aries will become the center and the ascendant will lie from 27 degree Pisces to 3 degree Taurus.

We follow the first way in casting the Bhava Chalit Chart where the Ascendant degree is taken as the starting point of the first house and the Placidus System of House division is used, which is also the most popular house division system.

You can see in Bhava Chalit that moving from the tenth house cusp (Virgo Sign) to the first house cusp (Scorpio Sign) there lies only one sign in between which is Libra and it is ruling the eleventh and twelfth house. But from first to fourth house cusp there lies 3 zodiac signs (Sagittarius, Capricorn and Virgo).

This shows that the angular width from tenth house to first house is shorter than what it is compared to the angular width from first to fourth house.

Now, to calculate the results of a planet we need both of these charts. Nirayana bhava chalit chart is really important but it cannot get you all the results.

Let's say, if you wish to find out if this person can give birth to twins or not. The conditions is that the fifth house, house of children, should be a dual house. Pisces is a dual sign. In Main Birth Chart (Ascendant Chart), fifth house is Pisces but in Nirayana Bhava Chalit Chart the fifth house is Aries.

All the Yogas, Aspects and Conjunctions are seen from the Ascendant Chart.

Therefore, we will see the fifth house of the Ascendant Chart and the answer would be, "Yes, this person can give birth to the twins if this person will go through a time period of Jupiter while Jupiter is supporting the child birth".
